Haemophilia is a blood clotting disorder in which one of the
essential clotting factors is deficient. In Australia there are
approximately 2,000 males who have haemophilia
and in Queensland there are approximately 400.
This deficiency in clotting factor produces a wide range of
bleeding episodes or “bleeds” usually into joints, muscles
or major organs and can occur spontaneously or as a result of
trauma or injury. The bleeding is generally stopped by an
intravenous injection of the deficient clotting factor. “Bleeds”
can cause permanent damage and change to the effected
muscles, joints and major organs resulting in sometimes
severe disabilities. This condition is usually diagnosed soon
after birth making the affected age range “birth to adult”.
Haemophilia Foundation Queensland (HFQ) provides support
and advocacy to men and boys that are affected and their
families around Queensland. HFQ also provides support for
people and their families affected by von Willebrand disorder
and other inherited bleeding disorders.
This support is provided through:
Community interaction such as community camps, youth
camps and men’s and partners weekends
OBE – Old Boys Executive monthly luncheons
Outreach Luncheons to support those members of our
community living out of Brisbane
